A2 Armchair by Artur Lindqvist for Grythyttan stålmöbler was shown at the Stockholm Exhibition in 1930, and become an immediate success. It was made out of solid wood and solid spring steel, but the designer had added a new and unexpected swing to his chair. It looked stiff, inspired as it was from the bauhaus/early fuctionalism. But when you sat down there was a soft rocking sensation which appealed to people. The design with the twisted steelframe made the legs take the weight, which was clever. This rocking ability has remained a favourite feature for generations of Swedes.

In 2008 designers Maria Håård and Jan Olof Ågren took Artur Lundqvists invention to an even higher level of comfort. Their A3 Sunchair is a laidback fellow that goes very well together with the more formal A2.

At the Stockholm Furniture Fair 2013 Swedish outdoor furniture company Skargaarden launced Grinda, a series of furniture by young talented designer Matilda Lindblom. In Grinda Chair we see an hommage to the classic swing, and to comfort and high quality in both design and materials. And yes, we´ve tried the chair, it is very comfy!

We asked Maria Håård and Matilda Lindblom how they prefer to spend their summer holidays? And what kind of outdoor furniture they consider the ultimate summer piece?

Maria Håård: I definitely could spend all my time by the Sea. A sandy beach + the horizon is my favourite inspiration. I got the idea for my Beach carpet while walking along the beach comtemplating the view. Even though I enjoy the A3 in my garden, my ultimate summer furniture is the hammock. It is perfect for reading, resting, sleeping… And its also easy to manage as you can fold it and bring it with you.

Matilda Lindblom: I am inspired by the summer life here in the Nordic countries. How we enjoy to spend time together with our near and dear, an how we need to truly feel the summertime. We eat together and spend time together in a different way than during the indoor-season. I think you find peace of mind when your chair´s got a slight swing. I find it the best outdoor-seating.
