The forgiving kind of glass

After years of plain smooth yet often colourful glass we now encounter some press glass news again! Yes! Being a hardcore sucker for classics like Kastehelmi by Oiva Toikka I welcome the Ripple glass series by danish brand Ferm Living. Pressed glass is such a ”forgiving” kind of glass; you can use a simple glass material and it can be mass-produced. If the design is fab…your glass product will be beautiful and nice to use on daily basis.

Kastehelmi glass table wear was designed in 1964 by Oiva Toikka. It is still in production by Iittala. ”Kastehelmi” is finnish for ”dewdrop”, and especially the clear glass gives the impression of a garden in the morning or looking through a window on a rainy day. The tiny glass bubbles extend outwards from the centre of each piece and is not merely decorative. Oiva Toikka was seeking a way to hide the joint marks left by the production process, and came up with this pattern.
