w163 Lampyre

Lampyre by Inga Sempé for Wästberg is made of opaline glass, emitting a calming light from base to top. The light can be adjusted from ”very bright to a phantomatic halo”. w163 Lampyre comes in two sizes. The large one is ideal as a solitary piece and will enlighten any space with softness. The smaller one will do well on a shelf or – following the Swedish habit – in a window to shine a friendly light to both the streets and in the home.

Hampson Woods 2016 Collection

For years I’v used and cherished my boards and spatulas from British brand Hampson Woods. Jonty and his crew make a great job taking care of old, unwanted wood transforming the material into beautiful everyday products. Here’s a glimpse from the production:

City by MCB

The Stockholm Design Week and International Furniture & Light Fair 2016 is over. It’s been 10 days of experiencing the city on a 24/7 schedule. Stockholm is beautiful! Just as the design presented! With the new song City by Moon City Boys mangling in my earphones I feel impressed by all the gifted Scandi creatives.

In the detail with Marimekko

Finnish brand Marimekko has launched their Spring/Summer 2016 Home Collection. I met with Creative Director Anna Teurnell and designer Carina Seth Andersson for a talk about the fine detail because that’s what make this collection extra ordinary. The hand drawn graphic patterns by Seth Andersson are screen printed with great skill and used for multipurpose fabrics in a colour scheme of white, pale pink and blue. And there’s a series of glass vases to go with the Oiva series by Sami Routsalainen; notice how the form of the small, delicate base of the porcelain has been integrated into the form of the vases, creating a floating feel! Alongside the distinctive and timeless design by Carina Seth Andersson, Marimekko present a folkloristic, organic pattern by Aino-Maija Metsola and some really cool patterns from the Marimekko archive, like the iconic Sonaatti.

A Friendly Minimalism

The Contemporary Scandi Minimalism is a very easygoing style. Neat, yes…that’s part of the concept. But look how nice the colours and different materials interact with the natural Nordic daylight! As a result this beautiful habitat has a really good feel to it. This is a home where you can relax and entertain, spend time alone or together with friends, prepare a dinner or read a book. Planning is one way to achieve space and comfort in your home. Good lighting the other. This small apartment for two has got it all perfect.

Care for your chair

We’ve had a maintenance day. A furniture maintenance day. Once in a while you need to take care of your Scandi classics if they’ll grow old with grace. My Y-chairs in light natural maple are treated with soap and nothing but soap. They’ll get dirty…oh yes! But after a rinse with soap for natural wood furniture they look as lovely as ever.

Monochrome

Monochrome colouring regularly features in the Scandi interior trends. Often in a soft greyishblue scale which emphazies the architecture and let everyday life, with all its imperfections, bloom. Imberg Architects in Old Town Stockholm has painted their studio in a colour similar to the original from the 18th century. Beautiful! And very soothing.

Rattan handicraft

It may seem long before it’s time to put the rattan chairs out in the Scandi garden but it also takes a long time for the furniture to be made. Larsson Korgmakare in Old Town Stockholm is the last rattan furniture maker in Sweden! Erica Larsson is 4th generation at the company. Among many models Larsson Korgmakare make Josef Frank’s beautiful models for Svenskt Tenn.

Book treats by Signell Knutsson

In a series of small book related objects Swedish designer Jessica Signell Knutsson has explored how the small detail work in the design process. Her Book Socle and Book End are simplistic but made with great craftsmanship in different materials, from simple mdf board to rare Swedish Kolmård marble.
The Objects for Books are exhibited at Konst-ig Art Bookstore in Stockholm 30 September – 17 October, 2015.
