The unfolding of beauty…

It’s time for the amaryllis bulbs to be planted and the hyacinths to go into vases. In app. 6 weeks from now the graceful flowers will blossom, filling the room with their lovely scent!

I’ll keep this beauty in mind while following the amaryllis of 2018 while they grow, slowly… into tall and slender…into white and lime…into perfection.

A little scruffy around the edges…

Sooner or later all Scandi design items gets a little bit scruffy around the edges. But design of high quality will grew old with charm and dignity. That’s why vintage Scandinavian is still in the loop! Your design pieces definitely’s got a second life and it’ll take a lifetime or more before such a piece is worn out.

In this Swedish house a few simple chairs with worn paint adds a laidback feel to the designer table, strict greenery and minimalistic architecture. From a piece by Cia Wedin for ELLE Decoration. What will next Season bring?

It’s late August and time to take care of and bring the garden furniture and planters into storage. It’s also time for thinking about next ”season”: What to grow and in what…and perhaps look for additional furniture and garden tools. The Scandi brands knows how to produce environmental friendly garden beauties. Look out for brands like Byarums bruk and Blå Station!

Perfectly Iris

Earlier this year Iris Hantverk won the Formex Formidable Award for ”best product”. Now the handsome brushes by Lovisa Wattman are in production. And as usual they’re perfectly manufactured by the gifted craftsmen at the Iris Hantverk workshop in Stockholm. Iris Hantverk has a long history of working with visually impaired craftsmen; the 6 craftsmen in Stockholm make brushes according to an old Swedish tradition but the design is contemporary.  Every brush is a wonder of aesthetics, function, environmental commitment and splendid craftsmanship.

The Scandi Bathroom

Several readers have asked for posts on the Contemporary Scandi Bathroom. Here’s some fine spaces where a simplistic approach and a clever use of daylight plays with well chosen pieces of furniture and objects. Creating not only a functional bathroom but a room you like to spend time in. Where inspiration is all around! All pics by fab Anna Kern.

Precious days!

During the first week of June the scent from the old lilac tree is all over our urban garden and we take every opportunity to enjoy a fika under its green foliage. Every year the amethyst colour of the flowers evoke a feel of wonder in me; it is something about that colour! This kind of colourful is daring in a Scandi interior. But try! If only with a bunch of flowers. And see how it adds to a contemporary feel!

On the road with Anna

On request: house-stories signed photographer Anna Kern. It is a privilege to work with Anna and  spend a day or two in a private home, trusted to shoot and write the family’s story.  During the many hours on the road we get to know the landscape of Sweden, from the sunny fields of the south to the archipelago of Stockholm to the deep forests of the north.  Let’s re-visit some homes from 2016:

calle2

On the outskirts of Stockholm we met with ceramic artist Calle Forsberg and garden designer Marika Delin. Marikas brother, architect Buster Delin designed the building in a 100% ecofriendly style, with simple solutions to maximize the function of the combinated home/studio.

calle1

The kitchen is placed on top of the ceramic studio and warmed up by the ovens Calle use to burn his objects. The ”wallpaper” in the bedroom is made by raw, plant dyed, aquarelle paper. By Cia Wedin and Anna Kern for ELLE Decoration SE.

pelle2

We didn’t want to leave: Photograper Pelle Bergström’s villa in Skåne is a sanctuary for the soul. You rest, you work, you cook good food. And you do some gardening.

pelle1

The simplistic beauty of this house is made into a welcoming home by the cool arrangement of classic furniture + inherited aaltopieces + flee-market finds. By Cia Wedin and Anna Kern for ELLE Decoration SE.

harry2

In this small sweetie in the south of Sweden interior designer Marianne Eriksson has created one of the loveliest homes we’ve seen. By using simple, natural materials and some old and some new pieces of furniture Marianne did wonders with a very old, worn-down house. Beautiful!

tola1

Tola. The home of textile designer Maria Åström and artist Sam Stigsson. We’ve visited this house several time over the years,  shooting pics for our book ”Mönsterträdgård” (”Garden of Patterns”,  Scandi Edition 2016).  It is a home filled with inspiration and beauty.

In the northeast part of Gotland (an island located in the Baltic Sea) you may visit sculptor Stina Lindholm at Skulpturfabriken. The factory, studio, café and garden are open to the public.

And we had the pleasure to be invited to Stina’s personal space where old & traditional blend with new design into a contemporary home.  By Cia Wedin and Anna Kern for Lantliv SE.

beb2

In the south part of Gotland this architect home surprised us. You may work and design contemporary yet decorate your home in a traditional, simplistic country style. Look how nice the design pieces add to the style of the house!

beb1

And yes…we got to sleep in the blue bedroom! And the entrance is nothing but lovely! By Cia Wedin and Anna Kern for ELLE Decoration SE:

vaxbo2

Hanna and Jacob Bruce of Växbo Lin knows how to mix new/hi-tech with old/traditional, thus creating a contemporary home for their three young children and cat. In the extension part they’ve placed ”modern facilities” like bathroom, sauna and a washing machine.

vaxbo1

In the old part of the house they’ve restored the traditional ”salen” with great care and love. This room, with its wooden floorboards, linseed paint and handprinted wallpaper demand some carefulness when used, but is nevertheless part of a modern family life.

villm1

During the summer of 2016 we visited several houses to be published in 2017. Here’s a sneak-peak from an architects villa built in a 100% environmental friendly way.  The natural light play an important part in this house-story.  And the cows from ”next doors”…

villam2

Integrated in the landscape, with interior solutions combining aesthetics and comfort this home is a fine example of  a so called circular economy architecture. To be published in ELLE Decoration SE in 2017. By Cia Wedin and Anna Kern.

Christmas prep

We’re awaiting Christmas and Old Town is starting to look like a fairy-tale! Inside our beautiful 18th century house we enjoy breakfast in the kitchen, while reading the morningpaper and making plans for food and gifts. It is a time of preparation and contemplation.

Mönsterträdgård

My new book Mönsterträdgård (Garden of Patterns), on Swedish textile designer Maria Åström (Scandi Edition 2016), is now available at bookstores, designshops and museumshops in Sweden. Online at Konstig art book store.

Maria Åström, born in 1948, is one of Sweden’s most distinguished textile designers. For several years I’v been following Maria Åström in her creative work and it’s been a journey of curiosity, kind and cool. Hope you like it!

Mönsterträdgård is photographed by Anna Kern and the graphic design is by Anna Larsson.

Thinking Cosy

The short but beautiful summer season of Stockholm Old Town is coming to its end. We’ve seen sun and heavy rain. Every other day actually! The evenings are getting darker and the air is slightly cool. Now it’s time to turn to cosy blankets, and tea and a good book and a cat in the lap!

The House Story

Writing a so called house-story is a challenge. Text and pics must blend together into a portrait of someones most beloved home. It takes passion and commitment ”to make a home out of a house” and the people we visit have made that effort. We always feel privileged to be invited into a private home, and trusted with the task to capture its feel.
